Investing in Irrigation

By Lynette Simango

The rains failed our farmers again this year. We have walked past farms, some surrounded by banners from well known brands but the state of crops shows that not even the right inputs (seed, fertilizers etc) or even the right soil type could have saved you from this dry spell. This is why farmers need to start thinking about investing in irrigation facilities. You will save thousands if not millions by spending on irrigation. Yes, in the shortrun it will probably leave you in a debt which you will be able to repay in 2 to 3 years? Well in 5 years and beyong you will be glad to have made the ivestment. A good farmer knows when to invest in something that will bring returns years later and i know most farmers are not ready for this discussion. Tell us, how did you do this season with this dry spell?
