Is your cow unable to produce enough milk to sustain the growth of the calf? Does it neglect its calves soon after birth? If you ticked yes to the above questions, you should know you are dealing with an animal with poor mothering abilities. A good mother should be able to produce sufficient milk for the calf from birth until weaning. As the calf grows, its demand for milk increases and a poor mother wouldn’t match it. Willing to nurse of the cow is another important consideration we should look at. A good mother should lick the cow clean of birth fluids and membranes and make sure it suckles.
