The journey of a farmer is one filled with lessons learned through success, failures and experience. These lessons are not limited to the field of agriculture but extend to other aspects of life. Some farmers have succeeded and gone on to achieve great things, while others still struggle to make ends meet. Regardless, the journey continues and new lessons are learned each day.
Despite careful planning, there are factors beyond a farmer’s control that can have a significant impact on the success of their farming journey. Social, economic, political, and environmental conditions can all play a role in determining the outcome. As the saying goes, “the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.”
The journey of a small holder farmer is not an easy one. Each mile is different, with some being rugged and others smooth. Each day presents new challenges and experiences, both good and bad. No farmer can claim to have always had a trouble-free journey. Trials and tribulations are inevitable, but it is essential to remain focused on the overall mission and vision to avoid losing sight of the final destination.
Years of plenty will come, but so will years of drought and famine, as the past two agricultural seasons have shown. Although the future may seem uncertain, a positive and bold outlook, coupled with lessons learned in the past, can ease the twists and turns of the farming journey.
Ultimately, the most important thing is to enjoy the journey, for no one knows where or when it will end. Despite the challenges and obstacles, a farmer must remain resolute in their pursuit of success and never lose sight of their goals. The journey may be difficult, but the rewards are well worth it.
